What to Expect from the First Consultation — and Beyond

Starting therapy can feel like stepping into the unknown. At Solacium Therapy, we understand how important it is to feel safe, seen, and supported from the very beginning. That’s why the first consultation is more than just an introduction — it’s the beginning of a collaborative process built around you.

The First Consultation: A Space to Explore

In your initial session, we take the time to understand what brings you here. Whether you’re dealing with a specific challenge or just have a sense that something isn’t quite right, we’ll listen with care and curiosity.

At Solacium Therapy, we’ll explore:

You don’t need to know the answers — together, we’ll find them.

Some clients benefit from a structured approach such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). This evidence-based method is especially effective for concerns like depression, anxiety, OCD, panic attacks, phobias, and low self-esteem. Others may be drawn to a more open, exploratory approach, such as person-centred or narrative therapy, where sessions unfold at your pace, guided by what arises. And for many, a combination works best. We’ll work together to find the rhythm and style that feels right for you.

A Flexible and Evolving Process

Therapy at Solacium is not one-size-fits-all. We believe that:

  • Each person’s path is unique

  • Needs and goals may shift with time

  • The therapeutic approach can — and should — evolve to meet you where you are

You don’t need to come in with a clear direction. If you’re unsure of what you need, that’s completely okay — discovering it together is part of the work.

The Importance of the Therapeutic Alliance

A strong therapeutic alliance is at the heart of meaningful therapy. At Solacium Therapy, we place great value on building a connection that feels safe, respectful, and empowering. You should feel seen not only as a client, but as a whole person.

We invite you to check in with yourself during and after the first session: Does this space feel right for you? Do you feel heard? Do you feel like you can be yourself?

Therapy is most effective when it’s grounded in mutual trust and collaboration — and that starts from day one.

Honouring Every Stage of Therapy — Including the End

One of the most overlooked yet meaningful parts of therapy is how it ends. At Solacium Therapy, we view the ending of therapy not as a failure or a goodbye, but as a significant and valuable part of the journey.

Whether it’s a planned conclusion after reaching your goals, a pause for personal reasons, or a decision to leave because the fit isn’t right — every reason is valid. We encourage clients to leave therapy freely when they need to, without fear of judgment or guilt. And we warmly welcome clients back if and when they choose to return.

For certain approaches, especially CBT or trauma-focused work, therapy may require a stronger commitment — but never at the expense of your autonomy. Your freedom to choose remains at the core of our values.

In Summary

At Solacium Therapy, we’re here to support you — with structure where needed, with openness where helpful, and with flexibility always. We believe that therapy works best when it honours both commitment and freedom, safety and growth.

If you’re thinking of beginning therapy, know this: you don’t have to have it all figured out. That’s what we’re here for.
